Gujarat is leading state in achieving first connectivity to villages and habitations in the country. The state has achieved more than 99% connectivity. After this glorious achievement, with a view to achieve inclusive development the state Govt. has focused the development of rural infrastructure. As the R&B Department is primarily responsible to deliver good quality of roads in the state, the Mukhya Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (MMGSY) initiated for this purpose in year 2016-17. The broad objectives of this scheme are to provide first connectivity to remaining Villages and habitations, to meet the pace of development in the state as well as aspirations of the people, to construct new non-plan roads i.e to provide additional connectivity to villages / habitations, to upgrade Metal / Earthen roads to the level of Black Top Surface Asphalt roads, , to construct High-level structures at the place of existing Cause ways / deep in view to facilitate rural areas with all weather roads, to increase the level of safety and travel ease widening of the important rural road sections also included and to meet the increased loading and traffic requirements, the existing road section are to be strengthened.
The Govt. of Gujarat is committed to its social responsibility also and special provisions have been made for Tribal areas or roads passing through forest area.
The Gujarat Rural Road Project (MMGSY Scheme) is focused on Rural Infrastructural development, but not limiting to that, the scheme is expected to generate huge employment opportunity in rural areas, also it is expected to contribute in strengthening and improving the social structure of rural Gujarat.
It is planned to take up works with estimated cost of Rs. 10,000 Crore under the scheme during the span of three financial years. With the results and outcome generated by scheme it is very likely to be extended further. In tune with the approach of Govt. of India, the Govt. of Gujarat and the R&B Department also believe that the key to inclusive economic development and overall growth lies with the development of Rural India and Rural Gujarat.
